Howdy Partner! Tudo Bem!

Email from Erica
Received  October 21, 2013

Today was a bit crazy busy and I only have like two seconds!!  But here's some info:

I'm in Austin, Texas working in the Mount Bonnell singles ward!  I'm loving it!!! It's so great to be here! The people are incredible! I'm in a trio with two awesome trainers: Sister M and Sister Cl. Missionary work is incredible and hard!  I'm printing your email so I can read it later!

Your questions!

1.  What is your new address?
Email me if you would like Sister Greenall's latest address: christine.greenall@gmail.com

2. What has been your favorite experience in Texas so far?
The people here are awesome!  Favorite moments:  getting to the mission home!  Our mission president and wife, the Sl’s, are awesome! Our first day in we got to go to the Alamo (just like on the district) and we all stood in front of the Alamo as the AP elders read us the story of the Alamo....at the end they related it to a quote about choosing the Lord's side. They had us all stand behind a line (like in the Alamo story) and asked who would cross to join the Lord's side!  Then we all crossed! Then they took out a big box of copies of the Book of Mormon and said, "ok! Let's go place these!" Scary!  Rejection, avoid eye contact, "do you have a minute?" "No.", haha!  It was really hard!  We learned what not to do!!  Then the AP elders came and helped me and my companion!  He would stop people and start talking to them (he's so good at it! He's just so friendly so people talk to him) and then he would pass them over to us and we would share the Book of Mormon with them. They fed us lots of good food that night and for lunch that day and we all met together as the new missionaries. There were 20 of us new missionaries and 10 are visa waiters.

The next day: transfer meetings! We went to the big transfer meeting in San Antonio where all the San Antonio missionaries got their new companions and assignments for areas. There was a group of us left in the middle without our assignments at the end and we found out we were going to Austin! So here I am!

We have lots of people we are working with here! Incredible people! Our work is through the members and the referrals and I'm surprised how much we have to do!

We had a baptism on Saturday! Her name is A and she is amazing! She is the perfect example of someone who was prepared to receive this gospel!

Also, we visited a guy named R yesterday.  Wow, he's amazing.  He has had a difficult past, but he has such an amazing light about him now and he loves the gospel so much!  He reads from the Book of Mormon every day and prays. He's a really unique and cool person. He has three awesome dogs, a big Doberman, a little terrier, and a Pomeranian, and they are super nice because he's a dog trainer.  THE GOSPEL TRULY CHANGES LIVES! He is a new person! And he is incredible!!!!

3. What has been the biggest challenge since arriving in Texas?
Hardest thing... I learned what Irmao Porter meant when he said missionary work is hard. He said that we need to go to where our investigators are before we can bring them to where we are. One of our investigators is struggling so much.  She is going through some really difficult family situations. We prayed for this sweet girl and to know how to help her and comfort her and to give her what she needed.  We began talking with her and comforting her. Words came to our mouths. Scriptures came to our minds. And for a moment it felt like our Father in Heaven was speaking with her through us. Which I'm quite sure he was :)  After sharing some scriptures, she actually said through the tears "Thanks, girls" Which truly meant a lot.

It was so hard to see someone in so much pain. As missionaries, we learn a bit more how to feel for others as the Savior does, how to love them, and how to want so badly to help them. I love the people here so much already. I have seen many miracles already! Verses of scripture have come to mind when I need them!  In one lesson, we had a question, and a specific book of the bible came to mind with a specific chapter and specific verse. It was Amos 3:7 which I learned in seminary.  But at the time that it came to mind, I honestly could not remember what it was about. I looked it up, and it was perfect for his question.  It's amazing to be a servant of the Lord.

We meet people at just the right times and in the right places... It's amazing how missionaries are guided. Missionary work is hard, but it is the work of the Lord! I can feel that! It's spiritually exhausting, but so so so rewarding!!

Tudo Bem Tudo Bem!

I really don't have much time this p-day.  I should have more next time! But for now,

Eu amo voces!!!! I hope all is well!

Oi! Oi! Last P-Day in the MTC

This week has truly been incredible. I never really know where to start or what to say with these emails. Just know that everything is incredible here and I am so happy! Dad, thanks for your awesome dear elder.  I really loved that.  I am so excited to serve in TEXAS! How many people get to serve two missions???  in one?? The second mission call was about as exciting as the first!  And I'm so excited to be bordering Kelsi's/Sister M's mission, and to be serving in the same state where Grandma and Grandpa Greenall served, and even to be in the mission where some of Aunt Paula's family lives!!! How cool!!!!!

This last week has involved many goodbyes and many incredible experiences where the Spirit was undeniable.

Testimony meeting as a district.
Testimony meeting in class with Irmao Porter
Irmao Porter "culture day" where he shared his mission things and experiences
Saying our goodbyes at 3 or 4 am in the morning
The elders giving the sisters priesthood blessings before they leave
Learning SO MUCH through the Spirit

Receiving our reassignments! Sister Ch and I had left the cafeteria... we all thought the assignments were coming Thursday night, but we walked out after lunch and saw a group of people with their reassignments, so we ran back in, told the elders, and our whole district charged like a stampede to the mail room!!  We opened them right there!!  We went off to the side, Elder G passed out the papers, then we went around in a circle and read our assignments.  LOTS OF EXCITEMENT and hugs/handshakes (depending on whether elder or sister :)  Hahaha, we had lots of firm handshakes with the elders this week. The firmest handshakes I've ever given! These elders are our brothers now!  We are so sad to say goodbye!  But they are coming to Texas with us, so that's cool!  The only ones left here at the MTC (in our district) are the 6 of us going to Texas!  We sent Elder B off to San Diego this morning!

Yesterday in class with Irmao Miller we practiced doing contacting on a bus!  Hahaha! We stood in front of the class as if we were standing up on a bus and said "Oi!! tudo bem tudo bem?? Eu sou Sister Greenall e eu SEI que Jesus Cristo vive!!!! Nos temos uma mensagem maravillosa para voce!  Se quiser ouvir mais por favor fale conosco!!! "  "Hi! I'm sister Greenall and I know that Jesus Christ lives! We have an incredible message for you!  If you want to hear more, please talk to us!"

My computer doesn't have Portuguese so I can't put accents, but here's some Portuguese thoughts...

A vida e boa. Life is good. Tudo bem aqui. Estou tao animada para servir no TEXAS! E depois BRAZIL tambem! Eu tenho dois chamados missionarios!!! QUE OTIMO!

Eu sei que Jesus Cristo vive. Ele e verdadeiro. Nao tenho ningum duvida que Ele vive e e meu Salvador e Redentor.  Eu amo meu Salvador! Eu amo Jesus Cristo! E amo meu Pai Celestial! Deus e nosso Pai Celestial! Deus e SEU Pai Celestial! Eu sinto seu amor todos os dias. Ele e tao tao bom. Ele e mercicordioso e amoroso. Ele enviou Seu Filho aque para expiar para nossos pecados. Este evangelho e verdade. Sao as boas noticias!! O evangelho de Jesus Cristo vai a trazer o mais alegria na sua vida.

The gospel of Jesus Christ is this: His Atonement. He died for you. He suffered for you. He's felt everything you have ever felt -  your pain, your sorrow, your grief, your loneliness, your guilt, your joy, your hope, your longing.  He is ALWAYS there for you.  He is knocking on the door.  He gave EVERYTHING for us so we could have this "at-one-ment" and become one with He and our Father and our families again!!

The gospel is true!

I love you all! Eu amo voces!!! PAZ!

-Sister Greenall

Oi, oi, oi! Tudo bem??

Oi, oi, oi! Tudo bem??

Things here are just awesome. AWESOME! I can't believe next week around this time I'll be leaving for the REAL mission field! Time has flown by like a cheetah with wings on a roller coaster! This Thursday I will be getting my travel assignments!  So I will find out if I have my visa and will go right to Brazil or I will get my temporary reassignment to a mission in the US of A! Either one will be wonderful. As a missionary, I feel even more that wherever we are we are in God's hands! For example...I was originally assigned to the Sao Paulo MTC...but after being here at the Provo MTC, I can't imagine not coming here! I love my district and companions and teachers so much! This experience has been perfect for me! As I know my whole mission will be, as long as I have the attitude "I'll go where you want me to go. I'll be what you want me to be."

Guess what our devotional on Sunday night was? VocalPoint!!! They came and did our devotional! It was so great!! Another amazing experience I got to have thanks to being here in the Provo MTC! Singing in General Conference, having a devotional by my most favorite singing group in the world. Life is grand. Being a missionary is so so good!!!

Things have been going great with our two investigators, Rafael and Carlos. It's pretty neat because we actually just teach our teachers...they are the "investigators", but they finally told us that every person they choose to be for the investigator is actually a real person that they taught! It's funny because they take their character super seriously. They don't break character ever!! And Irmao Miller, during class, when it's time for us to teach our investigator, he will say something like "Oi...Eu tenho muito fome agora...Vou a comer o almoço...mas voces vão a ensinar a seus pesquisadores. Bom?"  In other words "Hey...I'm really hungry...I'm going to go eat lunch, but you all go teach your investigators...Ok?" Haha, then he tells us which room we will find them in and he goes to 'eat his lunch'. Haha, so great! But he said that on the last day of class he will bring photos from his mission and tell us the real stories of the people we are teaching!! I'm so excited to hear the real stories of Antonio and Carlos! And Rafael is our investigator with Irmao Porter, so I'm guessing Irmao Porter will tell us about Rafael's story too. The cool thing is that every single companionship in our district teaches different investigators. So, we are the only ones who teach Carlos and Rafael.

We had a very good and interesting lesson with Rafael yesterday. We taught him the Doctrine of Christ -- Faith, repentance, baptism, receiving the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end. It was all going very well. We could feel the Spirit working through us as we shared testimony and thoughts and scriptures that we hadn't planned on sharing.

When we got to baptism is when things got interesting. I basically told him, in answer to his questions, that his baptism wasn't valid. Wow, hard to tell someone, right? Baptism is a super special thing! And anyone who chooses to be baptized is definitely demonstrating their faith in Jesus Christ and desire to follow him, which is awesome!! But I was explaining to him that it is essential that we are baptized by someone who has the authority to do that from God.

Rafael is Baptist. He's awesome! He loves the Lord so much and prays and studies the word of God and wants to follow Christ however he can! But he is having a hard time understanding that his pastor who baptized him didn't have that priesthood authority which the Lord restored to the earth through Joseph Smith. Joseph Smith received the priesthood by the laying on of hands, from the apostles of Jesus Christ, Peter, James, and John! Jesus Christ gave the priesthood to them through the laying on of hands and also to others as well including prophets in the Book of Mormon, like in 3 Nephi 11:18-26, when he teaches Nephi how to baptize and gives him and others the authority to do it. Anyways, Rafael got a little bit worked up when we told him that this church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is the only church that has that restored priesthood authority. I told him this, and it is true, that that is a very bold claim to make! But the reason I can make that claim, is because I know that it is true! God has all the answers, and if we will study and ask Him, He will reveal the truth to us!  Pretty amazing. What better source to go to than God Himself when we want to know the things of God? :D

I can testify that I know that this church has the priesthood authority of God because I have read the Book of Mormon, I have prayed about it, I have come to know for myself that the Book of Mormon is true, and that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God and that this church was restored to the earth through him by Jesus Christ! And because I have experienced firsthand the blessings of the priesthood!  I am so blessed to have a dad who holds the priesthood of God, and who has used this authority and power to bless me and our family! How incredible! And the amazing and awesome thing is that ANY man who takes the steps required to be worthy of the priesthood, can be given this gift! And it is a gift that is used to bless others.

I find it interesting that the priesthood can never be used to bless oneself. No matter who it is! Not even the prophet can use the priesthood to bless himself! It is a gift of service and love and selflessness! It is used to benefit and bless others! How awesome!

So, back to Rafael. The rest of the lesson went well. We testified, we kneeled in prayer with him, and he invited us to come back. The interesting thing is, is that even though he got a bit upset and wasn't really receptive to some parts of the lesson, it was my favorite lesson with him that we've had. After our previous lessons with him, I would often feel like there was more we could have done. I felt like he was feeling the Spirit testify of the things we were saying, but not that this church is any different than any others. I kept feeling like we hadn't truly taught him about THIS church.

And so as we left, we felt peace. I felt good about the lesson. I felt like a real missionary! In the Bible and Book of Mormon, missionaries didn't just go around saying "hey, wanna be baptized" with the response "hey, yeah! Sure!  Why not??"  They were rejected. They testified boldly, and were sent away. They were stoned, they were killed! They were mocked! I definitely wasn't stoned or mocked or killed after that lesson, but I felt like I had finally experienced a tiny bit of the fact that I am here to testify of truth, no matter what others think and no matter how others respond!  Of course I want to do it in the most kind and loving way possible because that's what the gospel is about! And we want to share this message because we love and God loves His children!! But we should never avoid teaching the truth so as not to offend someone. We must testify boldly and kindly and with love!  And I felt like that's exactly what we did. We expressed our desire to help Rafael and God's love for Him, and about how awesome it is that he has so much faith and loves the Lord, but we also testified to him that we know that this baptism, by the priesthood authority of God, is the way that Christ was talking about.

Later that night in class as we were doing companionship study, we came across this quote in Preach My Gospel that sums up really well how we felt.

"When you have done your very best, you may still experience disappointments, but you will not be disappointed in yourself. You can feel certain that the Lord is pleased when you feel the Spirit working through you."  ~Preach My Gospel, pg. 11

Mom asked me what a regular day in the MTC is like! I left my official schedule in my room, but here's an idea of our schedule: (Basically the same things every day but in different orders)

6:00 am wake up.
6:30 breakfast in the cafeteria
7:00-10am class with either Irmao Porter or Irmao Miller
10-11 Personal Study time (Study out of the Scriptures, Preach my Gospel, or Jesus the Christ or other missionary library books. I generally do Book of Mormon and Bible reading...I've been doing a lot of Book of Mormon reading in Portuguese. I also read Jesus the Christ sometimes, which is an incredible book)
11-11:45 Lunch in the cafeteria
11:45-2:45 Class with which ever professor we didn't have the first class period. (these classes are focused on our investigator teaching, learning Portuguese grammar, and learning how to teach the gospel.  Our professors speak only in Portuguese.)
2:45-4:00 Language study in the classroom
4:00-4:45 Dinner in cafeteria
4:45-5:15 Additional study (your choice- scriptures, language, etc)
5:25-6:15 GYM TIME! WOOHOO!
6:15-6:45 prepare for next activity (aka quick shower for me!)
6:45-7:45 TALL (Technology Assisted Language Learning- a program developed by missionaries for missionaries)
7:45-9:00 Additional Study
9-9:30 Daily Planning Session (for tomorrow)
9:30-10:30 Personal Time. During this time we get ready for bed, our sister training leaders come by (By the way, I am the new Sister Training Leader. We are the last district of sisters gong to Brazil in our branch...all the new groups coming in are all Elders, so I'm the training leader just for our district, rather than for the zone),
10:15 We have personal devotional - which means quiet time when you can pray! :D We spend that time in prayer or reading the scriptures, reviewing our day, etc.
10:30 Lights out and in bed

And then we do it again the next day! Woohoo! And I love it! Some days are a bit different, like Sundays! Sundays are awesome! We spend all day studying or at church or at devotionals, etc. We have devotionals every Tuesday and Sunday night. I've heard that our speaker for tonight's devotional is going to be pretty awesome... a general authority! We usually have members from the 70 or other awesome people speak! They are always great devotionals!

General Conference was so incredible! One thing I learned: The widow's mite was sacred. I loved how Elder Bednar shared that story from the Bible. When he said that her sacrifice was sacred, it really hit me. It hit me that her sacrifice was sacred because it was all she had! She gave everything! It hit me that as missionaries, it's great if we sacrifice and give a lot...but if we give everything - all our time and effort, our strength, our hearts, our focus, etc- then our sacrifice becomes sacred. When we give our everything, even when it is not enough, Christ fills in the rest, and he makes our sacrifice sacred and powerful.  I'm so grateful for that!  He is EVERYTHING!  Jesus Christ lives!  Everything is about him! Without him, the gospel wouldn't be anything. It wouldn't be possible for us to ever return to God's presence and be with Him, our Father, again!  Without Christ, we could never be clean again! We would be forever unclean in our sins!  Without Christ, we couldn't pray, we couldn't feel the Spirit, we couldn't be with our families forever, we couldn't have the priesthood, or prophets, or apostles, or miracles! He is everything!!!

I love you all!  Eu amo voces!!!  Espero que tudo esta bem!  O evangelho e verdadeiro!  O Senhor vive! Eu sei que estas coisas sao verdadeiras!

Tchau tchau!  Ate logo!

PS: I'm getting my travel assignments on Thursday! Did I mention that?.. Oh, I did! Haha, oops! Tchau! Com muito amor!!!!

Fofinho!

Email received October 1, 2013

Hi family and friends!!

Guess who I saw this morning?? None other than the fantastic pair of Danica and Austin! It was so great!! Since the meeting wasn't planned, I finally decided to run over to them and give Danica a hug! And we got to walk to the temple together! How awesome!!!

We have lots of fun going outside for gym time! It's chilly and enlivening! Quite a contrast from our 10 hours inside studying! hahaha! We love going out to play soccer and sometimes sand volleyball!  But the sand feels like snow when it's wet in the morning! I'm such a wimp! I lasted 20 seconds before running off to put my socks on.

SINGING IN THE RELIEF SOCIETY BROADCAST WAS AWESOME! [Erica sang 2nd Alto in the Missionary Choir at the General Relief Society Broadcast at the Conference Center in Salt Lake City on 9/28/13)

My favorite things:

1. When President Monson walked in. Everyone stood, the room instantly became silent, and the Spirit filled the room so strong. I KNOW he is a prophet of God. He was called of God to lead God's children on the Earth today!

2. As we sang "More Holiness Give Me" and I felt like I was singing my own personal prayer as a missionary. My favorite part is the a cappella part that starts with "More purity give me." As missionaries, our prayer is that we might be purified, sanctified, and refined so that we can be instruments in His hands to spread His glorious truths! The message of happiness and eternal joy!!

3. When I looked out over the giant audience of tens of thousands of women and felt overwhelmed with gratitude. My life replayed through my mind and I remembered once again how much Heavenly Father has guided me to this point. I could hardly believe I was there. I could hardly believe I was a missionary of the Lord! I could hardly believe how much He has guided my life and cared for me, even when I was being difficult to work with. I could hardly believe that HE sent His Son to die for ME. And yet I knew, and know, as I looked over all those women and sang this message "more holiness give me" to all the women around the world, that my God DID send His Son for ME and for every one of them. I know that my Savior lives!!!  My eyes filled with tears and my heart filled with gratitude at that moment.

4. After the conference ended, people in the audience started to wave to all of us missionaries. We all waved back and there were so many smiles and so much love in that room! Looking around me, I saw sister missionaries who had spotted their mothers and families and were waving so excitedly with tears streaming down their faces. I was imagining my mom and maybe dad (turns out he was watching too!:D) waving at me in their hearts while watching, and I was sending all my love to them! What a glorious truth: To know that families can be eternal! That my mom will always be MY mom and my dad will always be MY dad! And that that love and relationship will never end!!  And I left my family for a short time, to share THIS message with those in Brazil and wherever else Heavenly Father might send me: that families can be forever!!!

5. When walking out of the tabernacle room, every one of us got to hug each of the sisters from the Relief Society General Presidency. How incredible! They are so sweet and inspired! I know they were called of God to guide the women of the church and world!

6. The Bus ride home! President Nally was in our bus (MTC President) and he invited anyone who wanted to come to the front of the bus, to sit down, and to share their testimony and feelings over the speaker. We had 7 or 8 buses full of sister missionaries who sang and I think every bus did the same thing. That was incredible! We got to go up and bear our testimonies!! I bore mine of the prophet Thomas S. Monson and that Christ purifies and refines us, so that we can serve others and lift them! And all return to our Father in Heaven!

I remember growing up and knowing that Gordon B. Hinckley was the prophet of God at that time. When he passed away, I had a hard time believing that there could be a different prophet!  President Monson was called to be the prophet and I thought "how do we know he's the right guy??" The night before the first general conference with him as prophet, I got on my knees and prayed. I asked Heavenly Father if Thomas S. Monson was really called by Him!

The next day, conference started. I remember that as soon as Thomas S. Monson got up and started speaking, it was like he was looking right at me! And I felt his love for me (the LORD's love for me, since President Monson is His representative on the earth!) fill my whole body!!  It was so powerful! Everything he said was perfect for me! He was speaking right to me! And I knew that God heard my prayer, and this was his answer. President Monson was indeed called by God to be His prophet today!!

Another cool thing:

Abinadi!  What an amazing missionary!!! You can't be a better missionary than that. And yet!!! …he only had one convert that we know of!  And Abinadi probably didn't even know about that one at the time! And yet look at what came from Alma's conversion...and then Alma the younger's! WOW! Success in Heavenly Father's eyes is so different than the way we see success. As long as we are being obedient, diligent, and doing our very best to serve, we are having success in God's eyes. He sees what we do not.

Also, this week Brother Miller testified to us of our authority to preach the gospel! He assured us that we can use "I KNOW..." when bearing our testimonies, because WE DO! And if there is any missionary who does not know that what they are teaching is true, then they'd better find out! I've learned that as a missionary I cannot expect to teach a single thing unless I first know it is true.

Hahaha! Funny fact about the relief society broadcast! Notice how red my cheeks were? Was it obvious??? hahaha! We had to go through what I like to call "blush row" before going to Salt Lake for the conference. We went through a row of ladies who would look at us and say "ok, I'm going to add a little more blush.." and then the next lady would say "oh, pretty good! ..but I'm going to just add a little more..."  I was thoroughly blushed! hahaha! And then we all still had like 4 or 6 hours before we actually sang! Fun times. :D

Have you heard this? It's awesome:

"MY MISSION COMMISSION by: Bruce R. McConkie"

"I am called of God. My authority is above that of the Kings of the Earth. By revelation I have been selected as a personal representative of the Lord Jesus Christ. He is my Master and he has chosen me to represent him. To stand in his place. To say and do as if he personally were ministering to the very people to whom he has sent me. My voice is his voice, and my acts are his acts, and my words are his words, and my doctrine is his doctrine. My commission is to do what he wants done. To say what he wants said. To be a living modern witness in word and deed of the divinity of his great and marvelous latter day work. How great is my calling."

Wow.

Something that hit me very strongly last night is:

Doctrine & Covenants 8:2-3
(2) Yea, behold, I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart. (3) Now, behold, this is the spirit of revelation; behold, this is the spirit by which Moses brought the children of Israel through the Red Sea on dry ground.

The Spirit that guides us today is the SAME Spirit that guided Moses and prompted him to lead the children of Israel through the Red Sea. As missionaries we will feel like Moses all the time: pinned against an ocean with nowhere to go. We'll be teaching people who are older or more experienced than us, who have gone through trials we have never faced. We will meet our limits in trying to help, serve, and teach them. But the Spirit is not limited like we are. He sees so far beyond what we see. When Moses saw an ocean in the way, the Spirit saw the ocean parting. The Spirit is experienced. WAY more experienced than I could ever be!!!  And when I come to situations where I meet my boundaries and limits, it will guide and prompt me! There is no limit to what the Spirit can guide us to do when it comes to fulfilling the purposes of the Lord. When we see a sea, the Spirit sees miracles! Sees possibilities! Sees conversion and changing of hearts! I'm so grateful for that! If this work was up to us, the missionaries, we would be doomed! We're a bunch of 18+ year old young people!! We don't know anything! But as long as we have the Spirit with us, we can teach with power!! The Lord promised us that when he called us to this work! I'm so grateful!

I love you all! I hope you are doing well and are happy! God be with you!

   -Sister Greenall

PS: fofinho means cute! Isn't that the best???  You can also say "fofo"
